Oral Cancer Screening
The Oral Cancer Screening examination is performed to look for early signs of cancer or precancerous conditions within the mouth. It is usually done during a routine dental visit where the dentist will perform an examination of the mouth. There are additional tests that some dentists may use to aid in the identification of abnormal cells in the mouth.
Oral cancer, when identified early, has a greater chance for successful treatment. There are factors which can increase the risk of oral cancer. These include tobacco use, heavy alcohol use and a previous oral cancer diagnosis.
